Reducing sugar intake during pregnancy and a child’s first two years of life could have long-lasting benefits for brain health, according to a new study that examined the lasting effects of the UK’s post-war sugar rationing.
Researchers found that people exposed to lower sugar intake during their earliest stages of development were significantly less likely to develop dementia later in life. Among those who did develop the condition, symptoms appeared several years later than in people who grew up after sugar rationing ended.
While the findings do not prove that sugar directly causes dementia, they add to growing evidence that nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life plays a critical role in shaping long-term health.
A Unique Look at How Early Nutrition Influences Brain Aging
The research, published in npj Aging, used a rare “natural experiment” created by Britain’s sugar rationing during and after World War II. Sugar remained rationed until September 1953, limiting how much families could buy. Once restrictions were lifted, average daily sugar consumption in the UK nearly doubled, providing researchers with an opportunity to compare people born before and after rationing ended.
The team analyzed health and brain imaging data from more than 60,000 participants in the UK Biobank. Participants were grouped based on whether they were exposed to sugar restriction during pregnancy, the first two years of life, or not at all.
Compared with individuals born after rationing ended, those whose early development occurred during sugar restriction had a substantially lower risk of developing dementia. The strongest protective effects were seen in people whose sugar intake remained restricted throughout pregnancy and the first two years after birth.
The Benefits Extended Beyond Dementia Risk
The researchers reported that early-life sugar restriction was associated with a 27% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 46% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Participants also showed lower risks of depression and anxiety later in life. Brain scans suggested these individuals experienced slower brain aging, with healthier brain structures, including larger hippocampal and thalamic volumes, regions closely linked to memory and cognitive function.
Although the biological mechanisms are still being investigated, scientists believe excessive sugar exposure during critical developmental stages may influence metabolism, inflammation, and brain development in ways that affect health decades later.
Why the First 1,000 Days Matter
The first 1,000 days, spanning from conception to a child’s second birthday, are widely recognized as one of the most important periods for physical and neurological development. During this window, the brain undergoes rapid growth, forming billions of neural connections that support learning, memory, and behavior throughout life.
Previous studies have already linked excessive sugar intake during this period with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. The latest findings suggest brain health may also be influenced by dietary habits established during early development.
Experts Urge Caution When Interpreting the Findings
Despite the encouraging results, researchers and independent experts emphasize that the study shows an association rather than direct cause and effect.
Because the study relied on historical sugar rationing rather than measuring each participant’s actual sugar consumption, it cannot determine exactly how much sugar individuals consumed. Many other factors, including education, socioeconomic conditions, healthcare access, and overall diet, may also have contributed to the differences observed.
Experts also note that infant feeding practices in the 1940s and 1950s differed considerably from those used today, making it difficult to apply the findings directly to modern populations. Even so, the study’s natural experiment design provides stronger evidence than many traditional observational studies because it reduces some of the lifestyle differences that often complicate nutrition research.
Current Dietary Advice Already Supports Limiting Added Sugar
The findings align with existing public health recommendations that encourage minimizing added sugar during infancy and early childhood.
The World Health Organization advises reducing free sugar intake throughout life, while several national dietary guidelines recommend avoiding added sugars altogether for children younger than two years of age. These recommendations are intended to support healthy growth, reduce the risk of obesity and tooth decay, and promote lifelong metabolic health.
Although more research is needed before sugar restriction can be considered a strategy for dementia prevention, maintaining a balanced diet during pregnancy and a child’s earliest years remains one of the most practical ways parents can support long-term health.
The new study reinforces an increasingly consistent message from nutrition research: healthy dietary habits established during the earliest stages of life may continue to influence both physical and cognitive health decades into the future.
